Have you ever considered a winter holiday on the Isles of Scilly?

When the ambient teperature is never really cold; when the unpolluted air is so fresh and bracing; when there is often the foreboding roar of the surf poundingunforgiving rocks; when the spray plumbs high above awesome headlands and even the Bishop Rock lighthouse, rising proudly 175ft above seething waters, which has cast its beacon for the past 150 years into the western approaches of the Atlantic - thus providing both a warning and a welcome sight to countless weary mariners.

Scilly in winter is a time of clear bright skies when the sun is low in the sky producing a wondrous soft light and long shadows. There can be magical moments as the sun sets beyond the island of St Agnes and the walking here, as ever on these islands, is exhilarating, full of variety and colour.

This is a time when the flower pickers work feverishly in the small flower fields protected from the Atlantic gales by a patchwork of evergreen Pittosporum hedges native to New Zealand, and whn you can explore an island which you really have to yourself.

Then, exhilarated by your day, you can settle into Evergreen's warm, cosy, comfortable guest lounge to relax over a good book, a card or other game, a few glasses of wine or whisky, whatever - it is a time for finding your own entertainment. There are not the slide shows, talks, amateur dramatics, and gig racing of the season and most, if not all, of the hotels will be closed.

The restaurants, by and large, will not be open but the local hostelries all provide food of a good standard - you will not be disappointed. It is a time when there are few visitors and you can get to know the locals. A game of pool or darts maybe, or Euchre, an ancient Cornish card game, or just relax and enjoy the real simplicity of winter island life on Scilly.

We have a wide range of books in our guest lounge and even television but perhaps you will choose to just get away from all that disturbing world news which fortunately seems so far away from these islands.

Be it spring, summer, autumn or winter, Scilly offers a magical mixture of nature, wildlife, the elements, and island life all of which are constantly changing, day by day, week by week, and month by month.

According to International Tourism Statistics the Isles of Scilly has the highest come back rates of anywhere in the world ... is it any wonder?
